Dennis Lowe
My father is a
veteran of Roi-Namur in the 1944 landing. He is currently 79 years old, and retired (1st
Sgt USMC). He remembers the events of the landing very well, and is just beginning to talk
about the details. He was assigned at the time to one of the Marine air squadrons,
but the Marines, believing everyone should participate, assigned him and many others
(including PVT Sorensen, who won the Medal of Honor by jumping on a grenade during the
fighting) to an assault battalion. Dad remembers the landing, fighting, and the
subsequent Japanese air bombardment which was described as the most severe since Pearl
Harbor. Dad's memory is still very good, but needs prodding at times. I do not have
all the right questions, but if you have any which can trigger him, please ask.
