Kwaj, Quite an Experience
My name is Jan White. My Dad was stationed on Kwaj in 1951-52. I had my 10th birthday while we were there. I remember walking to the "walk in" outside theater to see movies, and I remember that school was a Quonset hut. Grades 1-5 were in one end and 6-8 were in the other end. I was the only 5th grader. We couldn't go to school for awhile because of a polio scare so our teacher taught lessons on the radio. There was an outbreak of food poisoning at Christmas because of bad shrimp at a squadron party. Both my parents were sick. We were celebrities in a way because my uncle was on the Navy end of the island (we were on the Air Force end) with his wife and son. I didn't know there was so much on the internet about Kwaj until I did a search on my cousin's name and it pulled up an entry he had made in a guestbook. I then searched on Kwajalein and am amazed at how much there is. Our time there was quite an experience for this kid. My Dad is Charles Osborne.
