I was on Kwaj in the early
60's. I worked in the command communications control center during
the Nike Zeus program era and also worked for Kentron Hawaii Ltd., as
electronic support.
You may recall the only 2 living things on Kwaj after the war was the
"lone palm" (namesake of the golf course) and "Sparky", the dog. Sparky
was still alive when I was there but died shortly thereafter. He was
left by the Japanese following the war and was adopted by the troops to
come thereafter. He died at estimated 19 years old.....quite a story.
I loved seeing the comment about seating backwards.....eeeeuuuuuuuwww.
And yes, it was always fun to fly around to the various islands in the
S. Pacific and to go to Hawaii for vacation/RR. Sunsets unequaled, slat
windows in the sleeping quarters with open windows and a breeze
perpetual coming off the warm Pacific waters. Bulbs in the bottom of our
closets to keep the moist air from mildew invading our clothes.
Flip-flops slapping across tile floors, sand in everything, gray
transportation busses, the best water ski bay in the world, rice and
beans and yes, more rice.
Good memories/sad memories, all part of the
Kwajalein experience.
